Everyone is calling last Tuesday “the big ugly”, when the first big swell of the year hit mavericks. Huge crew of big wave surfers made it out, surfing 50-80 foot waves. You couldn’t watch from shore because it was too foggy.
Anyway, the details:
- Surfer Darryl Virostko a.k.a. “Flea” had arguably the largest wipeout in Mav’s history. You can see pictures of the accident here, and a video of the accident here – unreal.
- Fleas story in SF Gate: “Master surfer cheats death in biggest swell of season at Maverick’s”
- Full hundred picture plus archive of the day shot by Frank Quirarte, can be seen here.
- A highlight reel video of mavs that day, as well as at Ghost Tree down in Pebble Beach (where big wave surfer Peter Davi died the same day the video was shot)
